Gua Sha / IASTM massage in Pittsburgh

Gua sha and instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) are both techniques that use a firm-edged tool to apply controlled friction and pressure to the skin and underlying soft tissue. Gua sha is a traditional East Asian practice with roots in Chinese medicine; it uses smooth-edged tools—historically made of jade, horn, or ceramic—to scrape along the surface of the skin with the intention of moving stagnant qi and blood and relieving pain and tension. IASTM is a more recently developed clinical approach, often associated with physical therapy and sports rehabilitation, that uses specially designed stainless steel or polymer instruments to detect and treat myofascial restrictions, scar tissue, and fascial adhesions. Both techniques can produce temporary redness or light marking on the skin as a result of increased local circulation. While their theoretical frameworks differ, gua sha and IASTM share a common mechanism of action and are often practiced by therapists with training in both traditions.
