About cupping therapy
Cupping is a form of bodywork that uses suction cups—traditionally made of glass, bamboo, or horn, and now commonly silicone or plastic—applied to the skin to create a lifting and decompressive effect on the soft tissue beneath. Unlike most massage techniques, which apply compressive pressure, cupping pulls tissue upward, creating space within the fascial layers and increasing local blood flow and lymphatic circulation. This decompressive quality makes cupping particularly useful for releasing stubborn myofascial restrictions, reducing muscle tension, and supporting recovery from injury. Cupping often leaves temporary circular marks on the skin, which are caused by the drawing of stagnant blood and fluid to the surface; these typically resolve within a few days and are not indicative of bruising from trauma. Cupping may be performed with stationary placement, or cups may be moved across the skin in a technique known as sliding or dynamic cupping.
