About neuromuscular therapy
Neuromuscular therapy (NMT) is a clinical form of soft tissue manipulation that addresses the neurological and muscular components of pain and dysfunction, particularly as they relate to trigger points, postural imbalances, nerve compression, and biomechanical patterns. The modality is grounded in an understanding of how the nervous system influences muscle function and how disruptions in that relationship can produce both local and referred pain. Practitioners assess the body systematically and apply precise, sustained pressure to hyperirritable areas within muscle tissue—commonly referred to as trigger points—as well as addressing the surrounding tissue and contributing postural or movement factors. NMT is often used for conditions including chronic headaches, back pain, sciatica, tendinopathy, and repetitive strain injuries. Training in neuromuscular therapy typically involves significant study of anatomy, physiology, and assessment skills beyond entry-level massage education.
