Myofascial release (MFR) is a manual therapy approach that addresses restrictions within the fascia—the continuous web of connective tissue that surrounds and interpenetrates every muscle, bone, nerve, and organ in the body. Fascial restrictions can develop as a result of trauma, inflammation, poor posture, or repetitive stress, and may contribute to pain, limited mobility, and dysfunction that is not always detectable by standard medical imaging. MFR techniques involve slow, sustained pressure applied to areas of restriction, allowing the tissue to soften and release over time rather than through forced manipulation. Sessions may feel subtle in the moment but often produce significant shifts in how the body feels and moves following treatment. Multiple schools of myofascial release exist, with some of the most widely known approaches developed by John F. Barnes; therapists' techniques and theoretical frameworks may vary based on their training lineage.
