About trigger point therapy

Trigger point therapy is a manual approach focused on identifying and treating myofascial trigger points—hyperirritable spots within muscle tissue that produce local pain and, characteristically, referred pain in predictable patterns distant from the point itself. Trigger points may develop in response to acute injury, overuse, postural stress, or as a secondary effect of other conditions, and they can persist and contribute to chronic pain syndromes when left unaddressed. Treatment typically involves sustained, direct pressure applied to the trigger point until a release is felt in the tissue, combined with work to address the surrounding musculature and contributing factors. The referred pain patterns associated with specific trigger points have been extensively documented, most notably by physicians Janet Travell and David Simons, and form the clinical basis for assessment in this modality. Trigger point therapy is frequently integrated with other approaches such as neuromuscular therapy, deep tissue work, and stretching for comprehensive treatment of musculoskeletal pain.
